The citizens of Gulfport, Mississippi will soon experience safer movements in and through their community thanks to a cooperative partnership between the Mississippi Department of Transportation and CSX Transportation. Through this agreement with the Gulfport City Council, grade crossing improvements and a reduction in redundant highway-rail intersections were made with safety taking the leading role in the three year process.

CSX operates through three counties across the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The city of Gulfport is located on this section of track. By the elimination of these nine highway-rail intersections we have reduced the number of potential incidents by 135,135 per day.
At this time there are 32 grade crossings within the 6.8 mile city limits; this is a ratio of one crossing for every 1,120 feet or one crossing for less than a quarter mile throughout the city. CSX Transportation will remove nine crossings from service and provide active warning upgrades to the remaining crossings. Upon completion of the project all crossings in the city limits will be upgraded to a full complement of active warning devices.
All of these improvements are being completed at no expense to the City of Gulfport under a corridor project program funded by CSX Transportation and the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
