A September 20 railway safety blitz in Hammond and East Chicago, Ind. resulted in 21 citations for area motorists who failed to observe crossing signals.

The effort, conducted by local law enforcement and CSX, included both enforcement and education efforts.

A public service announcement (PSA) sent to all the major radio stations informed motorists that they were 20 times more likely to die in a crash with a train than with another vehicle, that it may take up to a mile for a train traveling at 50 miles per hour to stop, that trains always have the right of way, and that train tracks are public property.

Chief Brian Miller of the Hammond Police Department was instrumental in getting the motorcycle division to respond to trespassers on the CSX right-of-way. Indiana law enforcement officers issued 21 citations at a September 20 railway safety blitz in Hammond and East Chicago, Ind. conducted by local law enforcement and CSX, according to Ken Gilsdorf, CSX Community Affairs & Safety.
