Volunteers Work Wonders at Windy City School

Chicago’s Funston Elementary School benefitted from the efforts of volunteers during an Oct. 22 Service Day. CSX partnered with City Year, Action for Healthy Kids and the Arbor Day Foundation to improve the grounds and interior of the school, which provides a comprehensive bilingual/monolingual academic program for students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.

“Little things can be a big deal if we do them together,” said Rob Bisceglie, CEO of Action for Healthy Kids, which is headquartered in Chicago.

Volunteers split into six teams and were assigned tasks that varied from planting trees and building benches to sanding and painting playground equipment. Garden planters that will be used as part of the students’ studies also were created.

Upon witnessing the hustle and bustle on a typically quiet Saturday morning at the school, citizens from the surrounding neighborhood joined the efforts.

After five hours of hard work, volunteers enjoyed lunch and recapped their accomplishments. Funston Assistant Principal Matthew Glanzman offered his appreciation to everyone who lent a helping hand to make the school a better place and Principal Julie Hallums echoed his statements.

“We are incredibly grateful to be awarded this grant, which has beautified our school community,” said Hallums. “The projects that were completed today will help provide an inviting and safe environment for our students and families to enjoy.”
