Retired Locomotive Engineer Relives His Days Behind The Throttle

Retired CSX locomotive engineer Jerry Boles longed to re-experience his days operating a locomotive, and with the help of a local charity, he was able to do just that.

Jerry, now 77 years old, is a 44-year veteran of CSX and its predecessor railroads. He was able to handle the controls of an engine once more though the work of Second Wind Dreams, a program operating in 120 locations throughout the U.S. that arranges for seniors to have the experiences of their dreams regardless of age or physical limitations.

The local chapter of Second Wind Dreams, administered through an assisted living center in Lebanon, Tenn., contacted CSX for guidance in fulfilling Jerry’s wish. Don Grupa, Superintendent Train Operations, and Robert Corriveau, Chief Dispatcher, helped arrange for Jerry to be treated to a day at the nearby L&N Museum.

It all came together on a sunny late September day, when Jerry and his grandchildren boarded the 1962-vintage L&N locomotive #405 on the museum grounds. Jerry showed he hadn’t forgotten his operating skills as he worked the controls of the standing engine and explained their use as his grandchildren paid rapt attention and other family members captured the precious moments in photos.

Commenting on his L&N Museum outing, Jerry reported, “It’s a good day. I hadn’t seen trains since I retired.”

The local TV station covered Jerry’s return to the controls of a locomotive on its evening broadcast. Click here to view the video.
