CSX volunteers help beautify Gulfport's Forest Heights Boys and Girls Club

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Most people know CSX by their rail road tracks stretching across the coast, but this company also has a mission to give back to the communities it serves. Saturday, CSX fulfilled that mission at the Forest Heights Boys and Girls Club in Gulfport.

"They want a whole lot more than just moving cars from one point to the next. They want to have a business, but still be able to give back to the community because we go through these communities," said Nathan Durbin, CSX Employee.

Durbin has worked for CSX for almost six years. He decided to volunteer in memory of his dad who was from Bay St. Louis and also worked for the railroad. He died in 2012.

"The railroad is kind of my life, and every day and night they live it with me and he loves it," said Durbin.

Shannon Goss, who is on the CSX Cooperate Citizenship Team, says CSX is dedicated to giving back to the communities where they live and operate.

"We do service events just like this across our network. Last year we did over 25 and this year we plan to do at least 25," said Goss.

The volunteers did things like build fences, paint murals and put up shelves for storage.

"We collaborated with CSX on this project to make a safer place and concentrate on the kid's safety here at the Boys and Girls Club Forest Heights unit," said Tawana Banks, Director of AmeriCorps Programs for the Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast.

For Banks, one of the most exciting projects completed were the vegetable boxes the club plans to use to start a community garden.

"It's going to incorporate great with our healthy habits, our eating program here, and our food AmeriCorps program will come in the summer and help them cultivate it and plant all the vegetables," said Banks.

CSX operates facilities in Gulfport and Pascagoula, and maintains more than 130 miles of track.
