CSX Provides Support to Aid in the Restoration of Ocala National Forest

The Ocala National Forest encompasses an increasingly rare and crucial ecosystem native to the Southeast — majestic longleaf pine forests. America’s longleaf pine forests have been reduced to less than 3 percent of their original 90 million-acre extent. The remnants of this once vast ecosystem currently support almost 60 percent of the reptiles and amphibians in the Southeastern U.S., nearly 900 endemic plant species, and 29 federally listed threatened or endangered species.

Recognizing the need for landscape-scale restoration on the Ocala National Forest, the National Forest Foundation (NFF) initiated a collaborative effort to restore the Ocala National Forest through its Treasured Landscapes, Unforgettable Experiences conservation campaign. With generous support from CSX Transportation, the NFF will plant 50,000 longleaf pine seedlings to restore this critical forest ecosystem. Restored longleaf pine forests will provide habitat for native wildlife species — including the endangered Red-cockaded woodpecker, enhance recreation opportunities for local communities, enhance carbon sequestration, and improve surface water resources.
