On June 18, 2014, twenty members of the CSX Service Planning and Operations Research team spent a volunteering their time at the Palatka Water Works Environmental Education Center, located near Welaka Conference Center and next to CSX's main line. This facility's mission is "to provide a tranquil place for reflection, a site for community activities, and a platform for experiential learning through informative exhibits, walking trails, natural habitat demonstration areas, special projects, and community interactions."
The team spent the day installing a large gate in the garden, priming and painting many pipes and a door, mulching walkways, applying sealant, affixing frog houses, clearing and mulching around plants along the nature trail, pressure washing the foot bridge, and digging a fire pit.
Shann Puriton the Co-Chair of the Water Works expressed her appreciation and gratitude, "The energy and expertise your CSX workers demonstrated were both inspiring and totally awesome. Impressive, too, was the fact that many of you drove a considerable distance and arrived early in the morning eager to get started on the projects. You even brought extra tools and water and shared lunches with us. There is no way to thank your CSX team enough!!"
This is the second year in a row that a team from CSX has worked with the Water Works to do a day of service and our work has allowed local school children to come for hands-on learning classes in a safe environment. It is great to be able to give our time to such a historical and educational friendly cause.
