As a Platinum Sponsor of FFA, an organization that promotes and supports agricultural education, CSX recently participated in the 2015 FFA Convention & Expo, a gathering of over 65,000 FFA members, advisors and partners in Louisville, KY. Among this year’s most prominent features was the launch of a new, socially driven safety campaign, “Safety in Numbers.” The ongoing campaign seeks to raise awareness for safety around railroad tracks by allowing participants to share carefully curated social content about railroad safety.
CSX enlisted the help of FFA attendees in support of this cause: if at least 2,025 people at the convention pledged to help spread the safety message, CSX would donate $10,000 to the Mark Kalina Jr. Foundation. Mark Kalina Jr. lost both of his legs in a 2012 pedestrian-train accident. Today, his foundation provides financial assistance to fellow survivors of traumatic injury. He also works closely with CSX’s non-profit partner,Operation Lifesaver,to educate young people about the importance of rail safety.
At the close of the three-day event, over 2,300 FFA students, advisors and guests joined the Safety in Numbers campaign, triggering the $10,000 charitable contribution.
