As a demonstration of its commitment to working closely with first responders in the communities in which it operates, CSX recently awarded a $5,000 grant to the Decatur, AL Police Department for the purchase of a tactical watercraft that will help ensure safety along the Tennessee River, including a major CSX railroad bridge that spans the waterway.
“We have a great, longstanding relationship with the Decatur Police Department, so when they came to us with a request for support to purchase the vessel, we were happy to do everything we could to make it happen,” said Mark Colebrooke, CSX Trainmaster in Decatur. “It’s going to be an important asset for them in continuing to maintain the safety of those in our community.”
The new vessel, a 2015 Ribcraft 7.8 27.5’ vessel with twin Yamaha 150 horsepower motors, will enable Decatur Police to perform a variety of tasks including technical rescues, hazardous materials mitigation and port security.
In addition, with a growing number of recreational boating activities and special events on the River, the boat will aid in search and rescue and boat assistance duties. It has also been equipped with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear detection equipment, which enables it to aid in the detection and mitigation of a potential terrorist attack.
