CSX/City Year Day of Service in Hamlet, NC

HAMLET NC, April 13th, 2013—In an event covered by the Richmond County Daily Journal, CSX, City Year and the City of Hamlet assembled over 75 volunteers to build picnic tables, benches and garden boxes from 8 am–1 pm at Hamlet City Lake. The same volunteers also landscaped the area around the lake, created murals and painted the caboose located at the entrance of the park.

"CSX has completely transformed this community with their volunteer work today," said Miranda Chavis, Hamlet Depot and Museums manager and the city's downtown coordinator. "City Lake Park is a gateway to the Hamlet community along the Highway 74 Business Route. This service day made an impact not only on the citizens of Hamlet, but the people coming through."

In addition to the landscaping, which included spreading 15 yards of fresh mulch, the volunteers painted an old Baltimore & Ohio Railroad caboose with vibrant red paint, specifically formulated to resist graffiti and a mural depicting Hamlet's residents and history replaced graffiti on a retaining wall. Several other murals were painted for the nearby ball field.

"The caboose is a strong reminder of our history as a railroad town," Chavis said. "It's a history our community is very proud of. The mural also showcases our railroad past. CSX is at the heart of who we are as a community and they are a proud continuation of the legacy Hamlet has as a hub of the Seaboard."

CSX is the largest employer in Hamlet, with more than 500 employees from within the city and surrounding areas. Many freight trains come through Hamlet for maintenance at the CSX Locomotive Shop and the proximity to railroad tracks has attracted numerous industries.

"I appreciate being part of a company that allows our employees to have this opportunity," said Angie Averitte, CSX terminal superintendent. "The recognition and pride it gives our employees is most important and demonstrates what CSX is all about—people making a difference."

City Lake Park also serves as a recreational area for citizens. Mayor Jeff Smart said on Saturday and Sunday evenings during the summer, the park is full of locals picnicking, playing games, fishing and exercising.

Ronald Nicholson, an employee of the neighboring Hamlet Senior Center, said the improvements not only make the city look better, but the center as well. Seniors often use the park for exercise, whether it be walking the paths or playing a number of games like bocce, shuffleboard, horseshoes and cornhole. Seniors also enjoy meals on the center's back patio, which overlooks the park and the pond.

"The park is a free activity that contributes to the quality of life of our citizens," Smart said. "In order to have it, we must have funding and support. What CSX did was unbelievable."

During closing remarks from Mayor Smart and Chavis, the duo presented Averitte and Grace Boal, City Year project manager, with proclamations and thanks for the hard work and support of CSX and City Year.

"Angie is always asking me how CSX can help and what difference they can make," Chavis said. "She is an amazing local leader and truly embodies the core values CSX stands for. Through her leadership, CSX is far more than a corporate citizen. The employees continue their support throughout the community—some through volunteering at the railroad museum, and others in our churches and other venues. CSX employees continue to make a difference."

CSX Corporation, based in Jacksonville, Fla., is one of the nation's leading transportation companies, connecting customers to ports, distribution centers and markets across the eastern United States.
