CSX, City Year and ACTrees plant 48 trees in Baltimore, Maryland as part of the Trees for Tracks program.

BALTIMORE, MD., Saturday, November 9th, 2013 — In 2009, CSX began its commitment to plant 21,000 trees—one for each mile of track in its 23-state service network—by 2014.

The mission was completed on November 9th by 85 volunteers, including 25 children, who planted 48 trees on the grounds of Moravia Park Elementary School.

"Today these volunteers are changing the landscape of our campus," said Jennifer Dukes, school principal. "These trees create an inviting environment for our students and in our community, not to mention tree planting ties into the environmental education we provide our students." Volunteers enhanced the aesthetics of not only the school grounds, but also the school itself. At the pre-K through second-grade lower building, they painted murals at the building entrance for pre-K, on the school grounds entrance sign and in the upper and lower cafeterias.

"Our students will be excited about the cafeteria murals," Dukes said. "In turn, the murals will spur classroom discussion about nutrition and give teachers additional, valuable teaching opportunities." She also said the mural inspired by Dr. Seuss' "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" will fittingly motivate and inspire the youngest students as they enter the pre-K area where their formal education begins.

Volunteers also built eight rolling bookshelves, two decorative "Students and staff will appreciate all the projects completed trashcan holders and an entrance sign with a bench and today as they will enhance our educational environment on planter. CSX also donated 16 additional bookshelf kits for a day-to-day basis," Dukes said. "Today's volunteer service teachers and parents to assemble at a later date. demonstrates to our students how much we are invested in them."

This year, the upper and lower buildings serve 835 preschool to fifth-grade students. The lower building alone serves more than 500 students.
