CSX Brings Together City Year and Over 80 Volunteers for Third Tampa-area Service Day in One Year

CSX brought together City Year and more than 80 volunteers, including contractors, CSX and City Year employees, and Fort Meade High School students and faculty, to help rehabilitate Patterson Park.

The park offers its Central Florida community a number of amenities, including: observation areas that can be used for fishing, two floating fishing docks, an 850 feet cement paved walkway, a restroom and concession facility with nearby parking, two gazebos with picnic tables, and a beach volleyball area.

CSX contractors, currently building an intermodal facility in nearby Winter Haven, began rehabilitating the park in June. Their work has included cutting down overgrown vegetation; removing trees from the lake; building an overlook and docks; repairing benches, gazebos, and light posts; and making the facility more handicap accessible.

During this service day, volunteers stained sitting structures, docks, picnic tables and the park’s gazebos, in addition to installing new benches, and grills. Lampposts, concrete tables and trash cans received a fresh coat of paint.

The event marked the third time in less than one year that CSX has worked together with City Year within a central Florida community to improve a special site.

“At CSX, our obligation to the communities we serve is much greater than simply connecting people, products and places,” said Chris Durden, director of terminal development. “We are committed to making life safer, greener, healthier and more rewarding for the cities, town and neighborhoods beyond our rails.”

Durden thanked Trans Development, Nickolas Savko & Sons, Whitehead Construction, Scott Bridge Company, DRMP, Inc., Trac-Work, Inc., Winston Contracting and TranSystems for their assistance and donations.

“The effort by all, including the teamwork and pre-work, show support for our company’s effort to give and care for our communities,” he said. “CSX recognizes the value of leading with integrity and supports organizations that do the same. We are fortunate to work with partners that not only share our core values, but also demonstrate dedication to the way we do business every day.”

Lifelong resident and Mayor Rich Cochrane has watched the beauty of the park come, go and now return. He remembers learning to swim in the lake and long summer days enjoying picnics and events with families and friends. More than 30 people use the park daily for walks and an annual fishing event is held there. Cochran hopes the renovations will encourage more residents to enjoy it.

CSX Corporation, based in Jacksonville, Fla., is one of the nation’s leading transportation companies, connecting customers to ports, distribution centers and markets across the eastern United States. CSX created Beyond Our Rails as an extension of our organization—displaying our commitment to Safety, Community, the Environment and Wellness through grass-roots volunteerism and focused corporate giving— actively engaging employees and non- profit organizations in programs and initiatives designed to make the world a better place.

City Year is an education-focused, nonprofit organization, founded in 1988, that partners with public schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. In 23 communities across the United States and through two international affiliates, this innovative public-private partnership brings together teams of young AmeriCorps members who commit to a year of full-time service in schools. Corps members support students by focusing on attendance, behavior, and course performance through in-class tutoring, mentoring, and after school programs.

CSX is proud to sponsor organizations like City Year in their efforts to improve parks, schools, recreational centers and other public places in the many types of rural, suburban and urban communities that CSX connects and serves. In September, the railway was added to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for its achievements in environmental performance, including reaching ahead of schedule the company’s voluntary goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by eight percent and its “Trees for Tracks” program to plant one tree for each of the 21,000 miles of CSX track.
