CSX and the Anacostia Watershed Society brought volunteers together to clean the Anacostia River and surrounding areas.

WASHINGTON, DC, April 5th, 2014—On April 5, CSX sponsored the Anacostia Watershed Society Earth Day Cleanup in Maryland, where over 2000 volunteers cleaned up 24 locations along the shores of the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C., and tributaries in Prince George's and Montgomery Counties.

Volunteers waded through Kingman Island's puddles and twisted limbs to pick up trash during the 20th annual Anacostia River Cleanup, hosted by EarthShare.

Located in the river near RFK Stadium, the island was created as parkland in 1916 by the Army Corps of Engineers. CSX has joined forces with several sponsors in the past several years to preserve the area's natural beauty. In 2013, over 2,305 volunteers collected 49 tons of trash from the surrounding areas.

"A lot of people associate CSX with a train going by," said Matthew Masterson, Grafton, W.Va., trainmaster. "Events like this give us an opportunity to give CSX a face and help the community and the environment. We're the most environmentally friendly way of transporting goods, but why stop there?"

A post-cleanup Earth Day celebration followed, where volunteers enjoyed food and entertainment while learning from local organizations how to keep the environment clean.
