CSX and City year partnered for a day of service making improvements to the Dignity U Wear warehouse.

Jacksonville FL., Oct. 19, 2013 — Nearly 80 CSX employees and their families made their mark on October 19 from 8 am to 12:30 pm by improving the aesthetic dignity of Dignity U Wear’s warehouse in Jacksonville. Volunteers painted the reception area, boardroom, sorting room and hallways, and the exterior walls, including two walls with the DUW logo and mission statement, “New Clothes. New Lives.”

“Giving this building a facelift illustrates the message of having dignity from the inside out,” said Alejandra Toro, DUW manager of programs. “We provide people dignity through clothing and we similarly want visitors to know we treat our product and building with the dignity it deserves.”

Carl Davidson, DUW board member and building committee chairman, said if DUW had to contract this work it would have to rely on a capital campaign to raise the funds, which could take years to accomplish. “Instead, we can use the money we would’ve spent to ship clothes to our customers,” he said.

Through a procurement program with New York apparel partners, including Calvin Klein, Brooks Brothers, FUBU and Tommy Hilfiger, DUW serves 300 nonprofit agencies nationwide that provide new clothing to veterans, natural disaster victims, women in crisis and schoolchildren. Annually, more than 3,000 volunteers devote their time and abilities to the multifaceted cause at DUW’s headquarters in Jacksonville. “We couldn’t do what we do without sponsors and volunteer support,” said Nan Coyle, DUW vice president of development. Since its founding in 2000 through September 2012, DUW has positively impacted nearly 600,000 lives nationwide with 7.4 million pieces of clothing worth $133 million. Last year alone, it served 138,000 individuals.

CSX, in part, supports DUW. Two management trainee classes have sorted clothing and completed inventory counts at DUW twice in the past year. In return, DUW gladly paid it forward by contributing to CSX’s 2012 Santa Train event and will continue to do so at the Future Farmers of America convention in Louisville, Ky., this month and the Santa Train event in November. “CSX has played an integral part in helping us achieve our mission statement,” Davidson said. “We are extremely thankful to call CSX our partner and we truly want to see the relationship grow.”

CSX Corporation, based in Jacksonville, FL., is one of the nation’s leading transportation companies, connecting customers to ports, distribution centers and markets across the eastern United States. CSX created Beyond Our Rails as an extension of our organization—displaying our commitment to Safety, Community, the Environment and Wellness through grass-roots volunteerism and focused corporate giving—actively engaging employees and non-profit organizations in programs and initiatives designed to make the world a better place.

City Year is an education-focused, nonprofit organization, founded in 1988, that partners with public schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate.

In 23 communities across the United States and through two international affiliates, this innovative public-private partnership brings together teams of young AmeriCorps members who commit to a year of full-time service in schools. Corps members support students by focusing on attendance, behavior, and course performance through in-class tutoring, mentoring, and after school programs.

CSX is proud to sponsor organizations like City Year in their efforts to improve parks, schools, recreational centers and other public places in the many types of rural, suburban and urban communities that CSX connects and serves. Earlier this month, the railway was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for North America for the third consecutive year. CSX is among three transportation companies recognized by the index for leadership in sustainable business practices.
