CSX and City Year partnered for a day of service, making improvements at Orlando's Rolling Hills Elementary School.

ORLANDO, FL., February 4th, 2014—Feb. 4 marked a welcomed new beginning for approximately 660 pre-K through fifth-grade students at Orlando, Fla.'s Rolling Hills Elementary School. More than 200 CSX Public Safety and Environmental employees and CSX contractors devoted much-needed time and effort to improve the aesthetic appeal of the school's cafeteria, courtyard, entrance, gardens, hallways, media room and playground.

"Environment plays a large part in students' educational experience," said William Gordon, Orange County Public Schools area superintendent. "Aesthetics must blend with education to complete the entire picture. Not to mention, the more we introduce our children to community service, the more they aspire to give back."

Volunteers painted a marquee, bike racks, sidewalk lines, tables and benches, playground sidewalk graphics, more than a dozen wall murals and eight mural bench backs, and the cafeteria, media room and two hallways. They also planted flowers; repaired eight mural benches; mulched garden areas and ridded them of weeds, leaves and shrubs; and refurbished 10 garden beds, a garden planter bench, two three-legged picnic tables, and garden and playground borders.

The school was built in the early 1960s. Publicly funded renovations are not scheduled until 2021. "Beautification builds pride," said Nancy Robbinson, school board member. "When you are proud of your environment, you are more successful in life."

Fittingly, second graders thanked the volunteers by singing "A New Beginning" during lunch. "It warms my heart for these children to be surrounded by strangers' hard work and sacrifice," said Principal Lukeshia Miller, with tears in her eyes. "It teaches them people care and are willing to sacrifice resources to contribute to their education."
