CSX and City Year partnered for a day of service, making improvements at Gulfport's Forest Heights Boys & Girls Club.

GULFPORT, MS., March 29, 2014—More than 80 local

They built two 5-foot storage shelves, organized a storage closet, built and stained six small garden beds, built two foosball tables and an air hockey table, painted 12 empowerment word murals on the gymnasium walls, and installed and stained a 500-foot fence and two gates for the outdoor playground at the Forest Heights Boys and Girls Club.

"The first thing we preach is safety," said Byron Carter, Forest Heights BGC unit director. "I want to make sure our children are comfortable in their surroundings. The fence will keep out unwanted traffic throughout the day and is a better way to protect our assets—our members."

Volunteers also honored the memory of friend and co-worker Kenny Durbin, a third-generation railroader and Atlanta Division division engineer, who died in 2012. His commitment to giving back was evident at company service events, food banks, the local high school and other local organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The BGC garden was dedicated the Kenny Durbin Memorial Garden.

"My father was proud to work for CSX," said Nate Durbin, Bay St. Louis roadmaster and Kenny's son, with tears in his eyes. "He was inspired by our company's values in safety and people, as well as its commitment to our communities. He felt it was a responsibility and an honor to give back. Thank you for being here, and thank you for this dedication. It means a lot to myself, my family and all those who knew my father."

BGC staff and members also are striving to overcome a significant loss. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina severely damaged the original facility on Holly Circle. Staff were displaced to North Gulfport Junior High School's band room for four years, where they served approximately 80 members during the school year and 100 members during the summer.

In September 2010, they celebrated 20 years of service and returned to a brand new facility on Holly Circle. Membership increased to approximately 220 members during the school year and 250 members during the summer.

"The BGC mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens," said Tawana Banks, AmeriCorps director for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast. "This great project will help ensure a safe, positive place for children and allow us to continue with our mission to teach healthy eating habits through the planting of healthy foods in our new planter boxes."
