ACTrees and CSX Team up for National Student Essay Contest

CSX was proud to sponsor the first "What Did the Tree See?" national essay contest, hosted by the Alliance for Community Trees and its partner, Treetures® Environmental Education Program. Elementary school students were encouraged to write about a tree in their community, its science, and history from the point of view of the tree. In this pilot year, the contest garnered nearly 100 essays and poems. A national panel of authors, and urban forest and environmental education experts selected the winners.

"These essay winners truly revealed their Green Hearts," said Judith Blau, Director and Founder of Treetures®. "Earning one’s ‘Green Heart’" is the phrase Treetures® uses to introduce planting and caring for trees, often to young children.

ACTrees Executive Director Carrie Gallagher sees the program as a unique opportunity "to teach 5th and 6th grade students the value of urban trees and how they affect the neighborhood and the local environment." The essay contest will become an annual event.
