Just a few years after partnering with the Alliance for Community Trees (ACTrees) and City Year — CSX, with help from employees and community volunteers have planted over 17,200 trees across the communities we serve.
With a promise to plant 21,000 trees — one tree for every mile of track in the CSX system — our employees have made a difference by participating in Trees for Tracks service days in cities from Boston to Jacksonville, Baltimore to Indianapolis, and beyond. Our company is proud to partner with and sponsor charitable organizations that share in our commitment to Safety, the Environment, Wellness and the Communities in which we live and operate.
Divisions across the network have played an integral role in the Trees for Tracks success by volunteering for events in their Division.
Recently, more than 50 volunteers, many of them Chicago-based CSX employees and their families, split into three teams and planted more than 50 large trees and improved landscaping at Chicago Park District’s Rainbow Beach & Park. They planted 12 species of trees throughout the park, which offers breathtaking views of the Chicago skyline.
Russ Schanlaub, Chicago manager field investigations, said that despite the physical labor, he encouraged others to participate in community events.
“Once you get out there, get working and see so many people working, there’s such a feeling of doing something good,” he said. “By the time the day is over, despite the sore muscles and sweat, you have a great feeling of accomplishment.”
