CSX Carbon Calculator Shows Positive Eco Impact of Rail Transportation

The CO2 emissions savings that CSX rail transportation provides in one year has approximately the same positive environmental impact as if one million passenger vehicles were taken off the road. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that shifting 10 percent of long-haul freight from the highway to rail would reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 12 million tons.

Rail is the most environmentally-friendly and energy efficient land transportation option.

To demonstrate this, CSX has developed an online Carbon Calculator that gives shippers the ability to make the best environmental choice of transportation options. The tool quickly calculates the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions savings of specific shipments by rail versus other transportation choices.

The Carbon Calculator prompts users to enter their shipment's weight and miles shipped and provides the estimated CO2 savings of shipping by rail.

As companies throughout the country seek environmental benefits, they are looking to their business partners for help. "We applaud CSXT's commitment to provide environmentally sound transportation solutions," said John Dineen, president and chief executive officer of GE - Transportation. "The Carbon Calculator serves as an innovative tool to empower businesses to make good decisions to drive productivity and limit greenhouse gas emissions."

"Rail is the most environmentally-friendly and energy efficient land transportation option," said Clarence Gooden, CSX executive vice president and chief commercial officer. "This tool enables our customers and others to better understand the difference they can make - on a shipment by shipment basis - by choosing rail."
