Beautification Project at Historic Edward Waters College

In support of Edward Waters College, its students and the Jacksonville community, CSX Corporation and City Year volunteered a day of service at the school, developing student areas and beautifying college grounds.

Approximately 200 CSX employees, 200 community members and 20 City Year Corps members completed more than 2,200 hours of community service at Edward Waters College, located in downtown Jacksonville.

Working with U.S. Congresswoman Corrine Brown, CSX, City Year and Edward Waters College developed the Service Day to encourage local support of the private Historically Black College (HBCU), which is over 140 years old.

Edward Waters College is the oldest private institute of higher learning in the state of Florida. A four-year HBCU offering studies in liberal arts and professional career programs, Edward Waters serves approximately 800 students in Jacksonville. Students at the college are active in a variety of extracurricular programs, including athletics, marching band and service in fraternities and sororities.

Nine teens ages 13–16 were the guests of 14 volunteers from the CSX Controllers’ group August 19. The volunteers set up outdoor games and played volleyball, kickball and egg toss right along with the teens and competed for the three-legged race crown.

Approximately 150 volunteers for the Warren/Holyfield Boys & Girls Club in Atlanta, GA. Tasks will include playground improvements, brush clearing & painting. Volunteers will also construct benches, cubbies & bookshelves for the club.
