More than one million students give up on school each year — and 50 percent of those drop outs happen in just 12 percent of schools.

Through Care Force, City Year sponsors can participate in a large scale service while helping to fund City Year’s work in schools.
CSX is doing our part to combat America’s drop out crisis, by serving as a national leadership sponsor to City Year, an education-focused nonprofit organization that partners with public schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. City Year corps members choose to serve where the need is greatest: of the 187 schools where City Year serves, three quarters are among the lowest performing in their states.
Founded in Boston in 1988, City Year works in 21 cities across the United States and has affiliates in London and Johannesburg. City Year corps members ages 17-24, supported in-part by AmeriCorps, commit to a year of full-time service in schools, where they provide additional support — the human capital — to help students who are at the highest risk of dropping out. As tutors, mentors and role models, corps members focus on the ABCs: helping students improve their attendance, behavior, and course performance in math and English.
CSX funds City Year teams , each comprised of 10–12 corps members, who arrive at school before the first bell rings and stay until the last child leaves the afterschool programs. CSX also funds two City Year teams focused on community service projects. Corps members give 1,700 hours of service each year.
CSX sponsored teams for the 2011-2012 school year:
CSX is supporting the development and launch of City Year’s National Admissions Center. Upgraded systems will allow City Year to create a more efficient and effective process for recruiting potential corps members and managing thousands of applications from across the country. For the 2011/2012 school year, City Year processed over 9,300 applications to fill this year’s 2,000 AmeriCorps positions.
CSX employees volunteer regularly in the communities where we operate in partnership with City Year’s Care Force team. Service Days, led by City Year’s Care Force team, engage CSX employees and community partners in a service project to help a neighborhood, school or organization in the CSX community. Recent projects have included planting trees in support of CSX’s Trees for Tracks initiative, building outdoor classrooms and installing fitness tracks and equipment. Since 2004, City Year’s Care Force has engaged more than 6,000 CSX employees and partners in over 50 community service events.
CSX also donated two trailers to transport Care Force equipment to service events across the country. These “mobile tool sheds” [link to photo of Care Force One or Two] leverage CSX’s business strength — transporting goods safely — with City Year’s goal of running engaging and effective community service events.
